Franz Kamlander was born mute. He could not read or write and communicated only with his hands. Considered mentally retarded, he worked on a farm. At the age of thirty-three, he was arrested for sexually harassing a little girl and then institutionalized.
He was frightened of anything connected to the idea of the Church.
Franz Kamlander had drawn prior to his arrival at Gugging. His work is crowded with animals ; he particularly liked cows, which he painted in many colors.
His drawings are signed with three undulating lines.
